reading about the killing of Joan of Arc as one of the first persecutions of a trans person in history, and about the acceptance of trans people in Native American Tribes with ‘2 to 3 in every village’ as being one of the reasons why the Spanish were so disgusted and massacred many.  This is all terribly sad and terribly interesting

The Commencement Address
fishingboatproceeds: Some people have asked to read the commencement address I delivered this morning to the 2013 graduates of Butler University. So here it is. My own commencement speaker, who shall remain nameless, began with a lame joke about how these speeches only come in two varieties: Short and bad. This raised my expectations, and then he went onto speak for 26 minutes, so I’m just...

Stop the feminists?: a response →
Maddie responds to Michael Duncan’s criticism of feminists on campus. i wrote a feminist thing and i’m worried there will be really horrible comments, so anything nice would be nice. ‘maddie i hated women before i met you’ or something. i dunno

Also today, a policy that me and my friend sam wrote in a pub became national NUS policy.  i feel weird emotional in a really good way

A Brief History of Liberty: NUS passes Evidence... →
abriefhistoryofliberty: As a delegate at the last NUS conference, I was looking forward to the chance to vote for a policy motion that originated with Liberals at York University committing the NUS to lobby the government for drug policy reform, broadly in line with Liberal Democrat values on the subject. Unfortunately,… I worked on this last year with some other people, and now...

I was 15; I’d never even been kissed before. I’d just never had any interest in all that, romance? PAH. Crazy talk.   I belonged to a kayaking club,...

Anonymous asked you: What do you think of people who study at polytechnics? And would you say that your opinion is matched by fellow red-brick students? - i’m not sure i count as a red brick student, my university was established at around the same time as polytechnics and sells itself as a ‘modern university’, whatever that means. I think education is a good in itself and...

York University SU rejects feminist society →
ourbipolarfriendss: ecriturefeminin: The University of York Students Union (YUSU) has refused to validate a feminist society for the second time. As someone who found a lot of solace in Bristol University’s excellent feminist society, this makes me very sad. Universities are meant to be a place of ‘higher education’ and surely it is important to have societies representing these kinds of areas...
